This is another tough question to answer but a quick answer is until late Monday or early Tuesday.  Memorial Day will be celebrated on Monday, May 28th, 2012 so shoppers can find some amazing deals during the entire weekend.  If you start negotiating a price early on Friday you will likely be given plenty of time to buy the vehicle.  Even if you start the car buying process on Monday most dealerships will be more than willing to offer an extension of the deals as long as you continue to go through the process of buying the vehicle through that specific dealership.

The book starts out by explaining that women affect almost every single purchase decision a man makes.  Even though Fortune 500 upper management boards are made up of mostly men it is women who make 80% of the retail purchase decisions in the United States.  This means that companies should work very hard to appeal to females rather than males.  An industry that proves the point is the motor industry.  Almost all American automakers use strong, masculine names for their vehicles – the Ram, the Escape, the Corvette or the Challenger.  When we look at Asian vehicles we see names like the Civic, the Camry and the Altima.  Isn’t it obvious which companies are pushing testosterone here?  When we look at total assets and stock prices over the last few years it is quite obvious who is winning the battle for market share in this industry.

There are several companies that I am currently invested in that hit a specific female niche.  Lululemon Athletic, Ulta, and Steve Madden have all found a way to penetrate the female demographic.  Some may say not all industries are affected by females.  To that I would say, “have you ever been in a relationship?”  Just the other day I went with my girlfriend to Dicks Sporting Goods and guess who was picking out my golf apparel?  If there was ever an industry that was male dominated it was golf but I am still allowing a female to dress me for my high slice.

I will be very interested to see where the book goes from here (I am about 20% into it).  The author is trying to help businesses recognize ways to reach this specific demographic.  Being a male, I know how hard it is to get inside the female brain.  With that being said, I also know that females make the majority of purchase decisions.  I wonder if this means that the majority of searches on the Internet related to retail products are from females.  My guess would be an astounding yes!  Although some may think of homes and electronics as huge male purchases the book also points out that females have a strong influence on these purchases as well.

How many guys have gone to Best Buy to buy a brand new HD TV without first asking their wife or girlfriend?  All of you single guys do not count as you tend to do whatever you want.  Even if you are single it is likely the case that you have asked a woman’s opinion on many purchases.  If you are smart, you would ask one of your female friends before every purchase because other women may think less of you when they see the sports posters on your walls at home.

Home decor and fashion are a completely different ball game as I would imagine women make 99% of the purchase decisions in this realm.  I know that my girlfriend finds a way to make 99.99% of purchase decisions when it comes to what I wear.  I might pick out a pair of tennis shoes every now and then but most of the time she has an opinion about those as well.  She even picks out my golf shoes and she never even sees me play golf!

This leads me to a very important point – Women control spending so they must be pleased!  We have seen the stock price of Sears tank over the last several years and much of this has to do with the fact that the company refuses to update and make stores more appealing to women.  Do you think Target and Sears have completely different prices on most items?  In all reality, Sears tends to have many more sales than Target yet Target has a stronghold on this demographic.  Has anyone else noticed that JCPenney is doing everything possible to clean up their image and appeal to women?  I would imagine that the former Apple executive that is now running JCPenney knows a thing or two about making products that women love – remember that iPod thing?  Maybe you know about the iPhone or iPad.

The following picture is a perfect example of the different between men and women.  Many men would think this is nice but they would love to throw out a fly or worm and see how big of a fish they can catch.  Women would love nothing more than to sit with their feet in the water talking about their relationships or how great their day was.

One of the biggest problems I came across is I have no idea what are furniture companies and what are furniture brands.  Pottery Barn has a Sawyer Buffet Hutch.  Is this the name of the line of furniture made by Pottery Barn or is this an actual furniture company that they are selling.  I tried to do some research online and the name is way to generic to know if it is a separate furniture company or if it is simply the name of one of their lines.  Not that I am a stickler for certain products but I do like to do my research before making a big purchase.

If you were to go out and buy a new car you would not simply accept that a Focus is either a line from Ford or a completely seperate company sold through Ford.  You would want to get some reviews, check the CarFax, look at crash tests, etc.  This is exactly how I look at making a furniture purchase.  Obviously things are a little bit different but many customers end up having furniture for much longer than they will own their next vehicle.  I have friends and family members that have had furniture for several decades.  Wouldn’t it be a very good idea to research a multiple decade decision.  I wouldn’t go out and get married to someone I met last month, although I guess many people in America would.  Maybe this is the exact reason that I am struggling here.

I will admit that I am a much more long term thinker which is unlike most people my age.  I have several good friends that will go drop a couple thousand dollars on a new leather couch without any research.  This is something I cannot do.  In fact, I will subscribe to ConsumerReports.org before making any type of gadget purchase.  I have been patient enough to wait for the iPhone 5 as the iPhone 4 and 4s did not interest me as far as specs or upgrades.  I know this may sound a little silly but I will only make a purchase when I REALLY want something.

This gets me back to my furniture research.  I really do not need furniture and this research is making me not want to go through the process of picking out quality furniture.  I know I could go into a Pottery Barn this weekend and ask questions but that means I would have to spend gas getting to the store.  I would have to find a parking space in the huge crowds that will be out looking for all the sales and deals.  I would then have to fight these crowds to find an available associate.  After all this hassle I would find out that only certain lines of furniture are marked down 60%.  I would imagine that these are the exact same lines that got terrible reviews or aren’t the most pleasing to the eye.

Shopping with a female makes this process much easier but, unfortunately, my female shopping “partner” is busy this weekend with some other things.  With this being true, I will simply browse the Pottery Barn website and realize that I need someone much more knowledgable to help me out.  Interestingly, there are not a ton of furniture blogs or websites out there.  This could be a huge niche for anyone who has been in the furniture industry.  I can imagine selling furniture at Havertys or Rooms to Go is not the most enjoyable thing in the world but it could arm someone with some great knowledge for future businesses.  Combining sales with SEO is never easy but it could lead to a much different lifestyle.

Over the next few days I will continue to look at all the great Presidents Day sales and deals but this does not mean that I am going to make a purchase.  I am one of the few American shoppers who can window shop or Pinterest shop and not have to buy.  I could definitely afford it but I would rather step back and take some time to make this long term decision.
